The Hidden Plastic Problem Behind Periods

Periods are natural. The waste they leave behind doesn't have to be.

Every month, around the world, millions of women go through something completely natural.

They go to work.

They attend college.

They travel.

They care for their families.

They chase dreams.

And quietly, without much thought, they throw away the products that helped them get through those few days.

Out of sight.

Out of mind.

But what happens after that?

The Journey Doesn't End in the Bin

When we throw away a sanitary pad, it doesn't simply disappear.

It begins another journey.

Many conventional disposable menstrual products contain plastic components that are designed for durability and leak protection. While these materials serve an important purpose during use, they can also remain in the environment for a very long time after disposal.

Every pad used for a few hours may remain part of our planet's story for years to come.

Most of us never see that part of the journey.

We only see a clean bathroom bin.

Nature sees everything after.

A Problem Bigger Than Any One Person

No woman should ever feel guilty for managing her period.

Period care isn't a luxury.

It's essential.

The challenge isn't that women use menstrual products.

The challenge is that for decades, the market has had limited sustainable alternatives that are affordable, comfortable, and widely available.

Millions of women are simply choosing from the options they've been given.

That isn't their failure.

It's an opportunity for all of us—brands, manufacturers, innovators, and consumers—to build something better.

Why Materials Matter

The conversation around sustainability often focuses on dramatic moments.

Plastic bottles floating in oceans. Landfills overflowing. Forests disappearing. But environmental change also happens quietly.

It happens through the products we buy every week. The packaging we throw away. The tissues we use. The bags we carry.

And yes— The sanitary pads we rely on every month.

Small choices made by millions of people eventually become something much bigger.

Why Bamboo Caught Our Attention

When we first began building W.O.G., we didn't start with packaging.

Or branding.

Or colors.

We started with a question.

Could the materials themselves be different?

That question eventually led us to bamboo.

Bamboo is one of nature's fastest-growing plants and has long been valued for its versatility. Its rapid growth and renewable nature make it an interesting material for many everyday products—including period care.

That doesn't mean bamboo is a perfect solution.

No material is.

But we believe exploring better alternatives is how meaningful progress begins.

Sustainability Isn't About Being Perfect

One of the biggest misconceptions about sustainability is that every product must be completely eco-friendly to make a difference.

Reality is more complicated. Every product has an environmental footprint. Every manufacturing process uses resources. Every business has room to improve.

Including ours.

At W.O.G., we don't claim to have solved the problem.

We're simply committed to asking better questions, making more thoughtful choices, and improving with every generation of our products.

Because sustainability isn't a finish line.

It's a direction.

The Future Is Built One Choice at a Time

Imagine millions of women making period-care choices with both comfort and the planet in mind.

Imagine manufacturers competing not only on price, but on responsibility.

Imagine a future where sustainability isn't a premium feature. It's simply expected.

That future won't be created by one company. Or one product. Or one invention.

It will be built by thousands of small decisions made every single day.

By women who ask questions.

By brands willing to be transparent.

By manufacturers willing to innovate.

By communities willing to care.

Why W.O.G. Exists

We didn't create W.O.G. because we believed we could change the world overnight.

We created it because every meaningful movement begins with one better choice.

One better conversation.

One better product.

And perhaps, one day— Millions of better periods.

A Note from W.O.G.

We believe sustainability should be approached with honesty and humility. While our products incorporate bamboo-based, unbleached materials supplied by our manufacturing partner, we recognize that no single product can eliminate the environmental impact of disposable period care. Our commitment is to keep learning, improving, and sharing that journey openly with our community.
