The Period Myths We've Been Told for Generations
Separating tradition from science—with respect, curiosity, and compassion.

If there's one thing that has been passed down through generations almost as consistently as recipes and family traditions, it's advice about periods.
"Don't wash your hair."
"Don't exercise."
"Don't eat sour foods."
"Don't touch pickle jars."
For many women, these weren't just suggestions—they were rules.
Some stem from cultural traditions, some from attempts to help women rest, and others simply from misinformation that has survived over time.
At W.O.G., we believe knowledge empowers women to make informed choices. Rather than judging traditions, let's understand what science tells us and where culture and personal beliefs may differ.
Myth 1: You Shouldn't Wash Your Hair During Your Period
❌ Myth
Many people believe washing your hair during your period can worsen cramps, reduce blood flow, or make you ill.
✅ What We Know
There is no scientific evidence that washing your hair affects your menstrual cycle or blood flow.
If a warm shower helps you feel refreshed or eases discomfort, there's no medical reason to avoid it.
Myth 2: You Shouldn't Exercise
❌ Myth
Physical activity should be avoided during menstruation.
✅ What We Know
For many women, light to moderate exercise can actually help reduce cramps, improve mood, and increase energy levels.
Walking, stretching, yoga, swimming, or any activity you enjoy can be beneficial if you feel up to it.
The key is listening to your body. Rest when you need it, move when it feels right.
Myth 3: You Can't Eat Sour Foods
❌ Myth
Tamarind, lemons, curd, or citrus fruits interfere with your period.
✅ What We Know
There is no scientific evidence that sour foods delay, stop, or worsen menstruation.
A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains supports overall health—including during your cycle.
Myth 4: Period Blood Is Dirty Blood
❌ Myth
Menstrual blood is a form of "impure" blood leaving the body.
✅ What We Know
Menstrual blood is simply a combination of blood, uterine lining, mucus, and vaginal secretions.
It's a normal biological process and not a sign that the body is "cleansing itself."
Periods are a sign that the reproductive system is functioning—not something to be ashamed of.
Myth 5: You Can't Get Pregnant During Your Period
❌ Myth
Periods are a "safe" time when pregnancy isn't possible.
✅ What We Know
While pregnancy is less likely during menstruation than around ovulation, it is still possible, particularly for people with shorter menstrual cycles or irregular ovulation.
If avoiding pregnancy is important, reliable contraception is still necessary.
Myth 6: Everyone Should Have a 28-Day Cycle
❌ Myth
Anything other than exactly 28 days is abnormal.
✅ What We Know
Healthy menstrual cycles vary widely.
For adults, cycles ranging roughly between 21 and 35 days are often considered normal, and many people experience some variation from month to month.
Your "normal" is often more important than someone else's.
The Most Harmful Myth of All
Perhaps the biggest myth isn't about food.
Or bathing.
Or exercise.
It's the belief that periods should never be talked about.
Silence has prevented generations of women from asking questions, seeking help, or understanding their own bodies.
The more openly we talk about menstruation, the easier it becomes to replace shame with confidence and myths with knowledge.
A Better Conversation Starts Here
Every woman grows up hearing different advice.
Some traditions carry emotional and cultural meaning for families, while others may not have scientific support.
Both can coexist with respectful conversations and informed choices.
At W.O.G., we believe every woman deserves accurate information, compassionate conversations, and the freedom to make decisions that feel right for her own body.
